Get Your Dutch Citizenship by Descent

If you have a Dutch parent, you may already qualify for Dutch citizenship by descent. This is your opportunity to reconnect with your heritage and enjoy the benefits of being an EU citizen

How Dutch Citizenship by Descent or Ancestry Works

The Netherlands follows the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood), meaning citizenship is primarily passed from parent to child. You may qualify if:

  • You were born after January 1, 1985 and at least one parent was Dutch at your birth.

  • You were born before that date and your father was a Dutch citizen (mothers did not automatically transmit citizenship before 1985).

  • In some cases, if you were legally recognized by a Dutch parent before the age of seven, you may also acquire Dutch citizenship automatically

Note: Citizenship cannot be obtained directly through grandparents or great-grandparents, though there are procedures for restoring it if your parents lost theirs.

Why Obtain Dutch Citizenship?

Dutch citizenship not only strengthens your personal and family identity—it also provides the advantages of an EU passport. These include:

  • Freedom to live, work, study, and do business across all 27 EU countries.

  • Access to Europe’s top healthcare, education, and social systems.

  • Greater international mobility and consular protection abroad.

  • A stable, inclusive society known for quality of life, innovation, and sustainability

How Do I Apply for My Dutch Citizenship?

Applying for Dutch citizenship involves:

  1. Collecting essential records such as birth certificates and proof of Dutch parentage.

  2. Translating and legalizing documents when required.

  3. Submitting your application through the option or naturalization procedure.

At EuroPassport, we’ll:

  • Explore your family tree.

  • Locate historic records.

I obtained my Spanish citizenship through the Ley de Memoria Democrática (Law of Democratic Memory) in just one year from start to finish — all thanks to EuroPassport. From the very beginning, their team guided me with exceptional professionalism. They first located my mother’s birth certificate in Spain, which I had been unable to find for years. Then, they carefully assessed my eligibility and confirmed that I qualified for citizenship. Once the process started, everything was transparent, well-explained, and perfectly organized. Throughout every stage — from gathering documents to dealing with consular requirements — I felt completely supported by the EuroPassport team. They were always responsive, knowledgeable, and reassuring, which made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Today, I proudly hold my Spanish passport, own a lovely property by the sea, and enjoy my retirement life in Spain — something I never thought would be possible. If you’re considering reclaiming your European roots or obtaining citizenship by descent, I wholeheartedly recommend EuroPassport. Their expertise, dedication, and genuine care truly make the difference.

I have been working with EuroPassport for the last few months, and I just picked up my Slovenian passport today! They were really helpful from start to finish, they explained everything about the process, and used their connections in Europe to find my family tree and get me my Slovenian citizenship. Once I had that they set up a meeting for me at the Slovenian consulate, and a couple weeks later I had a passport in my hand. I'm really happy with the result. They did exactly what they said they would, and I would highly recommend using their service. Thanks Europassport!
