Get Your Maltese Citizenship by Descent
Do you have a Maltese parent, grandparent, or even great-grandparent? You may qualify for Maltese citizenship by descent. This is your opportunity to reconnect with your heritage and secure the benefits of being an EU citizen
How Does Maltese Citizenship by Descent Work?
Malta follows jus sanguinis (right of blood). You may be eligible if:
At least one parent is a Maltese citizen or was born in Malta.
You have a grandparent or great-grandparent born in Malta and can prove your lineage.
You provide supporting documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, passports, or official family records
Since 2007, Maltese law has expanded access, allowing second and third generations born abroad to apply. Once granted, Maltese citizenship is passed automatically to your children.
Unlike other paths, there is no residency requirement for citizenship by descent.

Why Apply for Maltese Citizenship by Descent?
Obtaining Maltese citizenship is more than a legal step — it’s both personal and strategic. Benefits include:

Dual nationality: Malta allows you to keep your existing citizenship.
