What is Estonian Citizenship by Descent?

Estonian citizenship by descent refers to the process of acquiring Estonian nationality through family ancestry. This means that if you have Estonian ancestors, you can apply for Estonian citizenship by descent and become a citizen of the country.

How Do I Apply for Estonian Citizenship by Descent?

As with many European countries, Estonia is governed by the Jus Sanguinis or “right of blood.” To be eligible for Estonian citizenship by descent, it is generally required that at least one of your parents be an Estonian citizen.

The process of applying for Estonian citizenship by descent involves submitting documents proving your Estonian ancestry, such as birth, marriage or death certificates of your Estonian ancestors. These documents will be evaluated to determine your eligibility and if you meet the requirements, you will be granted Estonian citizenship.

You should also know that a birth certificate from the ancestor is not enough to prove citizenship. At least one passport from the ancestor is also required, and ideally other documents to prove citizenship. With the help of our network of genealogists, we are able to search for documents to prove ancestry.

Who is Eligible for Estonian Citizenship by Descent?

Estonia allows citizenship by descent of only one generation, meaning you can only be eligible through your parents.

If one of your parents is an Estonian citizen born in Estonia, you are entitled to Estonian citizenship by descent, even if you were born outside of Estonia. This means that you can apply for Estonian citizenship and become a citizen of the country.

Additionally, you also qualify for citizenship by descent in Estonia if you were born to Estonian parents who revoked their Estonian citizenship before the age of 18 and now, as an adult, you wish to reinstate it. In this case, you can apply to regain your Estonian citizenship.

It is important to note that there are specific requirements and application processes to obtain Estonian citizenship by descent.
