Get Your Maltese Citizenship by Descent

Do you have a Maltese parent, grandparent, or even great-grandparent? You may qualify for Maltese citizenship by descent. This is your opportunity to reconnect with your heritage and secure the benefits of being an EU citizen

How Does Maltese Citizenship by Descent Work?

Malta follows jus sanguinis (right of blood). You may be eligible if:

  • At least one parent is a Maltese citizen or was born in Malta.

  • You have a grandparent or great-grandparent born in Malta and can prove your lineage.

  • You provide supporting documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, passports, or official family records

Since 2007, Maltese law has expanded access, allowing second and third generations born abroad to apply. Once granted, Maltese citizenship is passed automatically to your children.

Unlike other paths, there is no residency requirement for citizenship by descent.

Why Apply for Maltese Citizenship by Descent?

Obtaining Maltese citizenship is more than a legal step — it’s both personal and strategic. Benefits include:

  • EU citizenship rights: Live, work, and study across the 27 EU member states.

  • Healthcare and education: Access top-quality European systems.

  • Mobility: Visa-free travel with one of the world’s most powerful passports.

  • Dual nationality: Malta allows you to keep your existing citizenship.

  • Generational security: Your children inherit Maltese citizenship automatically.

For many, the process also rekindles a connection with family history—rediscovering documents, stories, and heritage to pass down to future generations.

I obtained my Spanish citizenship through the Ley de Memoria Democrática (Law of Democratic Memory) in just one year from start to finish — all thanks to EuroPassport. From the very beginning, their team guided me with exceptional professionalism. They first located my mother’s birth certificate in Spain, which I had been unable to find for years. Then, they carefully assessed my eligibility and confirmed that I qualified for citizenship. Once the process started, everything was transparent, well-explained, and perfectly organized. Throughout every stage — from gathering documents to dealing with consular requirements — I felt completely supported by the EuroPassport team. They were always responsive, knowledgeable, and reassuring, which made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Today, I proudly hold my Spanish passport, own a lovely property by the sea, and enjoy my retirement life in Spain — something I never thought would be possible. If you’re considering reclaiming your European roots or obtaining citizenship by descent, I wholeheartedly recommend EuroPassport. Their expertise, dedication, and genuine care truly make the difference.

I have been working with EuroPassport for the last few months, and I just picked up my Slovenian passport today! They were really helpful from start to finish, they explained everything about the process, and used their connections in Europe to find my family tree and get me my Slovenian citizenship. Once I had that they set up a meeting for me at the Slovenian consulate, and a couple weeks later I had a passport in my hand. I'm really happy with the result. They did exactly what they said they would, and I would highly recommend using their service. Thanks Europassport!
