Get Your Romanian Citizenship by Ancestry

If you have a Romanian ancestor, such as a parent, grandparent or even great-grandparent, you may be eligible!

What is Romanian Citizenship by Descent?

Romanian citizenship by descent refers to the process of acquiring Romanian nationality through family ancestry. This means that if one of your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents is a Romanian citizen, you can apply for Romanian citizenship by descent.

To obtain Romanian citizenship by descent, it is generally required to submit documents proving the familial relationship, such as birth, marriage or death certificates. In addition, other documents may be required, such as passports, civil records, and proof of residence.

You should also know that a birth certificate from the ancestor is not enough to prove citizenship. At least one passport from the ancestor is also required, and ideally other documents to prove citizenship.

With the help of our network of genealogists, we are able to search for documents to help prove your Romanian ancestry.

Who is Eligible for Romanian Citizenship?

According to the Romanian citizenship or nationality law, in articles 5, 10 and 11, it establishes that the eligibility to obtain Romanian citizenship by descent may vary depending on different circumstances. A person may be eligible to obtain Romanian citizenship by descent by:

  1. Direct descent: If one of your parents or grandparents is a Romanian citizen, you may be entitled to Romanian citizenship by descent.
  2. Restoration of citizenship: If you or your ancestors were Romanian citizens and lost citizenship due to certain historical circumstances, you may be entitled to restoration of Romanian citizenship. You should note that in this scenario, you must first restore your parents’ citizenship.

Romanian citizenship by descent offers a number of benefits, such as the right to live, work and study in Romania as well as in any other country in the European Union, along with access to health care and social services, as well as diplomatic and consular protection from the Embassy of Romania abroad.
