What is Slovenian Citizenship by Descent?

Slovenian citizenship can be granted in a number of ways: Slovenian origin; by birth in Slovenia; and by naturalization. Citizenship by origin or descent refers to the right of blood (known as “jus sanguinis”), which essentially means having at least one parent or grandparent who is or was a Slovenian citizen.

Who is Eligible for Slovenian Citizenship?

A child acquires Slovenian citizenship by birth if they are:

  • Born in Slovenia and either parent is a Slovenian citizen, or
  • Born outside of Slovenia and both parents are Slovenian citizens; or one of the parents is Slovenian and the other is stateless; or the child has no other citizenship.

A person born abroad with a Slovenian parent, who is not automatically Slovenian, can acquire Slovenian citizenship if they:

  • Submit an application for registration as a citizen of the Republic of Slovenia before the age of 36; or
  • Establish permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia before the age of 18.

Children adopted by Slovenian citizens can also be granted Slovenian citizenship.

Slovenian law provides that persons of Slovenian descent up to the second generation, who cannot register for citizenship, may make a discretionary application under a specialized provision. This application requires the applicant to demonstrate that they have active links with the Republic of Slovenia and can provide evidence of a minimum of five years of activity in Slovenian organizations.
