Who Can Obtain British Citizenship by Descent?
British nationality law allows citizenship to pass from parent to child, even if the child is born abroad. Eligibility depends on when you were born, and your parents’ citizenship status:
- From 1 July 2006
If one parent was British (by birth, adoption, or in their own right), you can automatically claim citizenship. This also includes children of Crown servants serving overseas.
- Between 1983 – June 2006
You are eligible if one parent was a British citizen and your parents were married at the time of your birth.
- Before 1983
You may claim citizenship if your father was a citizen of the UK and Colonies, was married to your mother, and could pass on citizenship.
Every family story is unique. We’ll help evaluate your specific case and guide you on the most straightforward path to citizenship.
